Dawlish Warren

A local nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Dawlish Warren is a sand spit across the mouth of the Exe Estuary. On one side of the sand spit is a popular tourist beach and on the other intertidal mud flats. These mudflats are feeding areas for internationally important populations of many waders and wildfowl, so the site is extremely popular with bird watchers and offers a rare glimpse at these magnificent creatures. If that wasn’t enough, a purpose-built hide overlooks the main high tide roost. The Exe Estuary, including Dawlish Warren, is a wetland of international importance under the RAMSAR Convention and a Special Protection Area under the EC Birds Directive for its wintering bird populations.

If you needed a further reason to join us, there’s even a public footpath leading from the hotel grounds down to the beach and the nature reserve, so you don’t need to stray far from the hotel to see the birds!
